Kalimna Park was
once a guesthouse in Healesville, a haven for families from Melbourne
intent on enjoying the fresh, clear air of the Yarra Valley.
While the guesthouse
was demolished many years ago and now only remains in its former
glory in photographs at the Healesville Historical Society, the
name has been revived with the opening and naming of single-storey
22-room accommodation on the original guesthouse site.
An existing brick
building, formerly a special accommodation facility in Bradshaw
Drive, Healesville, has been refurbished in a $1.5 million project
to provide high-quality, affordable housing for low-income single
people from the area.
The new accommodationnow
known as Kalimna Park and with 22 private rooms, ensuites and
large common areaswill be managed by Community Housing Limited,
a not-for-profit community group and the largest community housing
manager in Victoria.
'Finding a home in
areas like Healesville can be really tough for people on low incomes,'
said Housing Minister Candy Broad.
'Local housing support
services have been calling for more affordable accommodation in
the Shire of Yarra Ranges for some time and these new homes will
go a long way to meeting that need.'
Kalimna Park is now
fully-occupied with tenants drawn from across the Shire becoming
part of the Healesville community.
