The Victorian Aboriginal Maternity Services Program is provided through a partnership between the Quality Branch of the Department of Human Services and the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO).

It was established to enhance existing community-based Aboriginal health services in the provision of culturally-appropriate support to Aboriginal women during pregnancy, birth and in the postnatal period in the context of their general health and the well-being of their families.

Ms Kirby has worked for the Mildura program since its inception in 1999.

Mildura has one of the highest Aboriginal birth rates in the State and a relatively young population.

The Mildura Aboriginal Co-operative provided pregnancy care for mothers of 44 babies between August 2000 and August 2001.
