Overdose Awareness Day recognises effects of drugs
The Association of Needle and Syringe Programs (Anex) and the Salvation
Army are supporting the fifth annual Overdose Awareness Day, held
on Friday, August 26.
Anex Chief Executive Officer John Ryan said he was proud Anex could
lend its support to such a worthy cause.
Overdose Awareness Day is both an acknowledgement of the
sadness experienced by families and friends of people who have been
affected by overdose and an opportunity to promote greater understanding
about drug use in our communities, Mr Ryan said.
This year we will be encouraging people to recognise that
overdose relates not only to people who have died but also to people
who have suffered acquired brain injury or ongoing mental health
problems.
Mr Ryan said governments, councils, health services and individuals
were being encouraged to get involved and show their support.
In keeping with tradition the Overdose Awareness Day emblem,
the metal ribbon, will be available for purchase along with posters,
flyers and stickers.
As well, organisations and individuals will be encouraged
to develop and register their own local events or ceremonies with
us.
