Patients think this visitor is a bit of a wag
|

Goldie, the golden retriever who is a pet volunteer at St
Georges Hospital.
|
Every dog has his day and for Goldie its Wednesday.
Thats when the nine-year-old golden retriever visits St Georges
Hospital in Kew as part of the pet volunteer program.
He spends two hours touring the hospital with owner Vera Ungar
of Kew.
In a carefully-managed procedure, Vera introduces herself and Goldie
to patients to see if they would like a visit.
If not, Goldie backs off and Vera shares a few moments with the
patient before moving on.
But, in most cases, both the patient and Goldie are thrilled.
Goldie is very responsive to affection and can perform a couple
of tricks on demand.
According to St Georges Hospital Volunteer Coordinater Betty
Davis, Goldie also has quite a brain and has figured out all the
spots around the hospital where his treats are hidden.
Ms Davis said the pet program had been a huge success and she currently
had around 20 pets on her books.
She said they have a tremendously soothing effect on patients and
also helped many patients relax and open up, sharing stories and
information that significantly enhanced their well-being and peace
of mind.
Over the past two years, the pet program has tried a variety of
animals but dogs really have proved to be mans best friend.
Some people love a big dog to cuddle, others respond to a
lap dog, said Ms Davis.
But they all benefit from the affection and attention of
the pets and their owners.
St Georges Hospital provides aged care services as part of
St Georges Health Service, which is auspiced by St Vincents
Health.
