Office of Housing Property Services Acting Director Bill Barlow, builder Behmer and Wright’s Brett Behmer, Minister for Housing Bronwyn Pike, City of Moonee Valley Mayor Eugene Hammer and consulting architect McGauran Soon’s Melinda Biggin at the former VicTrack site of housing for older people and families.

Former VicTrack land in Flemington, bought by the Office of Housing for $1.7 million, is the future site of a new $10.8 million public housing development for older people and families.

Under the expert guidance of Moonee Valley City Mayor Eugene Hammers, Housing Minister Bronwyn Pike, with the aid of a mechanical digger, turned the first sod.

Scheduled for completion at the end of 2003, the Newmarket Street site will contain two buildings, both three storeys, providing 59 units.

One block will have 29 units for older people, the other providing accommodation for 30 families and singles.

The innovative mix of dwellings will include disability access and solar hot water.

‘This is a flexible, responsive and forward-looking design and demonstrates a commitment to addressing the growing demand for affordable housing,’ said Ms Pike.

‘Together with the redevelopment of the Kensington public housing estate, the Flemington project represents a significant investment in well-located inner-city affordable housing.’

The new development will be close to public transport and shops and will complement the neighbourhood character.

The buildings are designed to provide accommodation for older people in 20 one-bedroom and nine two-bedroom units, families in 10 two-bedroom and eight three-bedroom units and singles in 12 one-bedroom units.
