Older focus on cultural mix
Victoria is moving towards having the most diverse older population
in Australia, says Minister for Senior Victorians Christine Campbell.
Addressing a think tank on culturally and linguistically
diverse older people, Ms Campbell said by 2011, one in three Australians
aged 65 or over would be from culturally and linguistically diverse
backgrounds.
Victoria is enriched by its vibrant multicultural population
with 21 per cent of seniors aged 65 and over coming from overseas,
representing the heritage of more than 90 countries, Ms Campbell
said.
A majority have come from non-English speaking backgrounds
and the Government is working to ensure that all older Victorians
are valued and accommodated.
This think tank is enabling the Government to
sit alongside business and community groups to develop new ways
of delivering services to older people and to ensure our community
is sensitive to the diversity of the senior population as it continues
to grow over the next decade.
Ageing within our ethnic communities differs from the rest
of the community because of cultural and other differences. Special
attention and greater understanding is required, Ms Campbell
said.
